Cyfarthfa Castle Phase 1
The project is the first phase of a comprehensive restoration and redevelopment of Cyfarthfa Castle, Merthyr Tydfil. Cyfarthfa Castle and its Park are a unique and valuable part of the industrial heritage of Merthyr Tydfil and South Wales. The Grade I listed house was built in 1826 as the residence of the Crawshay family, who owned and managed Cyfarthfa Ironworks. The Castle is of national historical and architectural significance as ‘the best preserved and grandest ironmaster’s house in Wales’. It was later acquired by the Borough Council and extended in 1909 as Cyfarthfa Grammar School, now relocated. The Castle forms part of a wider Conservation Area which is a lasting symbol of Merthyr Tydfil’s industrial strength during the 18th and 19th centuries. Phase 1 seeks to restore the northwest range of the building which formed part of the School. The new uses for the building will include the Cyfarthfa Enterprise Centre, a suite of office units for creative industries, not-for-profit organisations etc. and which will be operated in association with the Orbit Business Centre. In addition, on the ground floor there will be an Education Centre and a new Collections Store for Merthyr Museum. The Museum occupies part of the 1826 house, the redevelopment of which will form Phase 2.
MTCBC and its partners are currently progressing with the development phase of the Heritage Lottery Fund Stage 1 Heritage Enterprise Programme with the view of submitting a second-round application by June 2015. HLF require proposals within the second-round application to be worked up to RIBA Stage 3 under the new RIBA Plan of Work 2013.
