Description of the contract

The Strangers’ Dining Room is an architecturally and historically important fine room in the Grade I listed Palace of Westminster. This room is also functionally significant, as a busy restaurant to Members and their guests when the House is sitting and as a function room for hire during recess periods. The Conservation of Strangers’ Dining Room project is scheduled to be carried out during the summer recess in 2014. The scope of the works is as follows: • Redecorate historic ceiling. The contractor is to reinstate a historic decorative scheme, involving painted stencil decoration and wood graining, using traditional paint. • Revive polish and repair oak panelling • Replace carpet and curtains • Restoration of the fireplace including new stone fender, new brass fireguard, encaustic tile fireback and glazed tile hearth, all to a bespoke design. • Improvements to the lighting consisting of re-lamping existing luminaries and new lighting to a bespoke design • Works to building services. • Scaffolding, and temporary protection. • Recording, including photography, production of record drawings, templates and workshop drawings.
