Description of the contract

Within the Grade I listed Palace of Westminster the Broadcast Box located in the House of Lords Chamber Press Gallery does not form part of the original design and is now redundant. In order to maintain the architectural integrity of the Chamber and provide better access to journalists covering debates in the Lords, it is required to remove the Broadcast Box, and install press seating and desks. The restoration of the House of Lords Chamber Press Gallery is scheduled to be carried out during the summer recess in 2014. The scope of the works is as follows: • Removing the Broadcast Box and de-commission associated electrical items. Works include strip out of redundant cables and ventilation ducts. • Potential asbestos removal relating to the above works. • Lower the existing rear timber benches and notepad stands to the original lower level. • Replace the existing carpet. • Board over the existing steps to restore the original floor level. • Continuation of the existing front timber benches and notepad desks across the void resulting from the Broadcast Box removal. • Supply new bench cushions, to match the existing leather cushions, to the extended benches. • Installation of decorative brass handrail to the gallery area, including ornate twirled rods and brackets to ensure handrail fits with existing handrails on other galleries. • Provide ventilation ducting for local heating / cooling to the Press Gallery from the central plant located in the Lords Plant room. • Disconnect the existing speakers and volume controls during works and reconnect post works. Allow for supply, install, connection and commissioning of new speakers and volume controls in new seating. • Create a working deck with sealed dust enclosure, with mechanical filtered air extraction.
