As part of its extensive development Coventry University is planning to refurbish its existing Richard Crossman Building (RCB) as part of its new Health and Life Sciences quadrant of the campus.
The Richard Crossman Building (RCB) is adjacent to the new Science and Health Building (SHB) and is the current home of the Science and Health Faculty. The refurbishment of the RCB will be phased with phases 1-4 running side by side with the construction of the new SHB and facilitates the movement of staff into these new premises as well as other campus accommodation. The SHB and Energy Centre are programmed to commence in January 2015 and the Richard Crossman Building Refurbishment is programmed to commence in April 2015 during the Easter holidays. The phasing of the RCB work has been aligned with time periods where the University is able to accommodate the works and various special measures will be required to facilitate the operability of the Universities teaching services and the planned refurbishment.

II.2.1)Total quantity or scope:

The Richard Crossman building is located in central Coventry within the ring road. It is on the southern extremities of the University Campus between White Friars Street and Much Park Street. Please see below for a location plan of the site. Generally the refurbishment works include interior remodelling including M and E, fixtures, furniture and equipment.
In addition the refurbishment provides for the redecoration of 2 main stair cores and the remaining external facade and there are also further options under review for inclusion including the potential replacement of single glazing windows for double glazed units and the improved replacement of the third and fourth floor roof surfaces.
The Design will be completed by the Clients Design Team to Stage E and the tender will be based upon this design. The Client has been keen to ensure that the quality of the design is high and through an excellent level of care and attention a robust design is being provided.
The Clients Design Team will not be novated but will remain in a Client compliance monitoring role. This will enable the contractor the freedom to bring what is in their view their best team for the project.
Outline planning consent has been awarded for the scheme.
The Richard Crossman Building Refurbishment (RCR) is an enabling contract for the new build Science and Health Building facilitating the move of several depts. to this building. The RCR will also be occupied during the refurbishment and will require some staff to be temporarily relocated within the building whilst the refurbishment is carried out. The phasing sequence is currently being reviewed by the Faculty.
The outline programme is as follows
Completion and sign off of stage E design planned as 24.10.2014
Appointment of Main contractor planned as 20.2.2015
Start of Phase 1 planned as 6.4.2015 (Easter Holiday)
Start of Phase 2 planned as 15.5.2015
Start of Phase 3 planned as 15.5.2015

Both programme and quality are extremely important for the Client and must be safeguarded.
