The objective of the Old Newcastle Project is best described in the mission statement:
‘To safeguard, celebrate and promote the unique heritage assets that comprise the mediaeval core of the City.  It will provide a comprehensive range of education programmes and enhance the understanding of the City’s rich history through imaginative interpretation and communication.  The Partnership will encourage the full involvement of all sectors of the community in the development, delivery and long term future of the project.  The project will promote a sense of place, a feeling of belonging and local pride.  It will make a distinctive contribution to the regeneration of Newcastle and the promotion of the City’s national and international image.’
 
The project is supported by an 85% grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.  The grant conditions are attached.
 
 
Proposed Construction Works
 
At the Black Gate:
    • Provision of new external lift to the first three floors
    • Construction of disabled access compliant route to the lift.  This will take the form of an elevated timber walkway along the eastern side of the building, linking it to St Nicholas Street and bus drop-off points
    • Disabled access ramps to the building from the road
    • Installation of toilets
    • Conversion of rooms and spaces to provide:

–          Visitor reception
–          Interpretation and exhibition spaces
–          Meeting areas
–          Learning space with resource centre
–          An administrative centre for the project
 
At the Castle Keep:

    • A timber ramp to improve disabled access to the Garrison Room entrance at ground floor level
    • Raised timber floor in the Garrison Room
    • Security and weather controlled entrance doors

 
The contract will be will be carried out in accordance with JCT Intermediate Building Contract 2011 Edition.
 
A firm of external consultants will be the Designer and Contract Administrator with NCC providing Project Management, Cost Consultancy / Quantity Surveying, CDM co-ordination, Building and Mechanical / Electrical Building Services Inspection.
