North Tyneside Council seeks expressions of interest from suitably experienced organisations to undertake the delivery of a neighbourhood enterprise support service throughout the borough of North Tyneside. This is an extension of the current programme which has been running since August 2009 so there will be TUPE implications. Over 3000 individuals have accessed enterprise support and to date over 900 new businesses have been created. The project has helped to increase the rate of self-employment in North Tyneside from 4580 (2009) to 5170 (2013) ONS June 2014. This has evidenced the success of the project but also highlighted the continued need for this type of activity especially with the cessation of other government support programmes. Although significant progress has been made the economy is still suffering the effects of the recession and self employment is seen as a crucial factor in the ongoing recovery. It is also envisaged that demand for this service will continue to grow as increasingly evidence suggests that the number of people turning to self employment are doing it because they want to not because they have to.
