The Design and Construction of the University of Sussex new Life Sciences School comprising of approximately 13 000 m2 GIA from approximately 11 000 m2 new build and approximately 2 000 m2 of refurbishment works with associated site works and ancillaries.

The existing facilities are not conducive to collaborative working as research groups and teaching facilities are spread across many buildings on campus. A new building for the School of Life Sciences aims to bring these groups together, creating new opportunities for inter-disciplinary collaboration.
The school will be accommodated in a refurbishment of an existing adjacent building — the Genome building — and a connected new build facility on the current Science Car Park, spread over 3 and half storeys; built to the local topography for level access points. The project has recently achieved sign off on RIBA Stage 02 Concept design with detailed design development progressing in Stage 03. It is anticipated Stage 04 design information to be available during the ITT tender stage to allow constructive workshops with short listed Main Contractors.
The development is not expected to include Class 3 Laboratory space (Class 2 only). It is currently expected the Design Team will be novated to the Main Contractor.
Key project development aims:
— To establish a sustainable state-of-the-art research and teaching environment for the School of Life Sciences,
— In co-locating the diverse disciplines that make up the School of Life Sciences, foster an approach that will allow collaborative and explorative research and learning to flourish,
— With the fast-paced nature of research and teaching development in mind, deliver a resilient and adaptable building that will allow the School to cater for changes in research and teaching with minimal disruption to its occupants,
— Provide a building that offers an inspiring place to work, learn and socialise that will ensure the School of Life Sciences can continue to retain current and attract new world class staff and students,
— Deliver a landmark building on time and budget for the academic year commencing 2018 that will positively contribute to the changing face of the university campus.
