Coventry University is connected to the Janet Core Network. The University has one 10 Gbps link and a secondary 1 Gbps connection into Janet for internet access. The University has also recently invested in a resilient Cisco Voice over IP telephone system. The University wishes to build on both of these to develop a more resilient voice service utilising SIP over the Janet connections as an alternative to traditional ISDN30 voice circuits.

— Improved resilience – utilizing the University’s 10Gbps and 1Gbps Internet connections and resilient voice infrastructure to provide resilient outgoing and incoming voice services. – Improved scalability – to enable the number of voice channels to increase without costly and time-consuming engineering effort. – Improved flexibility – to enable the number of voice channels to seamlessly scale up and down for short periods to support seasonal demand for extra capacity during events such as Clearing. – Reduction in telephony costs – to benefit from improved call tariffs and channel rental to reduce the University’s telephony expenditure. – Improved business continuity – The University is looking to move Direct Dial In (DDI) to the Internet cloud to support telephone number portability enabling DDIs to be delivered to alternative locations quickly and easily. Considering the above benefits, IT Services at Coventry University are seeking tender responses for a SIP over Janet service.
