Title

Demolition of Olympia Leisure Centre, Dundee

2.2

Description of the goods or services required

The Olympia Leisure Centre was constructed in the early 1970’s, comprising a mixture of steel, precast concrete and reinforced insitu concrete construction.

The superstructure comprises a two storey concrete frame, comprising a mixture of precast concrete and insitu concrete, with a flat insitu concrete roof structure supported by steel trusses bearing on the frame below. Concrete encased steel beams also exist.

The swimming pool basins are elevated above the ground level, of insitu reinforced concrete construction, supported on an arrangement of end bearing piles taken down to rock.

Seating decks comprise reinforced concrete construction, and overlook the Leisure Pool and Training Pool. A reinforced concrete dive board structure also exists, serviced via stainless steel stairs.

A substantial basement Plant Room, comprising a 10″ thick reinforced concrete slab, suspended between pile caps, exists, along with substantial pieces of plant.

There is a considerable amount of asbestos within the whole building, all as detailed in the Refurbishment and Demolition Asbestos Survey.

The pedestrian overbridge between Earl Grey Place and Olympia comprises steel trusses, with concrete deck, supported on concrete feature columns, supported on piles taken down to rock.

It should be noted that along the east elevation there will be a requirement to ensure that the adjacent electricity sub-stations integrity is maintained when removing the basement. This may involve provision for temporary works.

The site is also bounded by an existing dock to the west, and the Hilton Hotel to the east, which will limit site access.

The contractor will need to be able to coordinate their works with other Dundee waterfront activities that will be taking place on adjacent land.
