Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I) is a strategic business function of NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) that provides a portfolio of testing and advice which supports the diagnosis and/ or treatment of a variety of medical conditions in the following clinical areas:
— Solid organ transplantation and clinical advice for donor selection;
— Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation and clinical advice for donor selection;
— Blood transfusion and transfusion reactions (SHOT);
— Platelet refractoriness and provision of HLA/ HPA selected components;
— Platelet immunology;
— Granulocyte immunology;
— Immunogenetics including diagnostic testing and pharmacogenetics;
— Haematopoietic stem cell donor registry typing.
NHSBT require Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) rapid typing system (s) to ensure compatibility between donors and recipients of solid organ transplantation (renal, liver and cardiothoracic). Building on our strengths as a national provider, NHSBT’s strategic aim is for its H&I services to become the preferred provider and supplier of choice for H&I related services in NHS England. We would like to work with future suppliers to realise this ambition and to perform HLA rapid typing in an efficient, timely and cost effective manner to meet the demands and expectations of our customers and the patients we serve.
For NHSBT these services are supplied through a national network of six laboratories located at Birmingham, Newcastle, Sheffield, Tooting, Filton and Colindale. However, this tender will also allow the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) and Welsh Blood Service (WBS) to utilise any framework agreements awarded.

The award of this framework agreement will be to the most economically advantageous tender on the basis of the criteria set out in the invitation to tender document on BRAVO ( It should be noted that this tender will allow for the use of modified testing protocols, using the ‘in house’ exception to 98/79 EU Directives (Medical Devices and in vitro diagnostic devices).

No business whatsoever is guaranteed under any resulting framework agreement or contract indeed there is no guarantee that any framework agreement or contract will be put in place in relation to this notice. No compensation etc. will be paid if a tender or resulting framework agreement is withdrawn for any reason. Bidders should take part in this process only on the basis that they fully understand and accept this position.
