Sefton Council
ARFQ – for A Freelance Artist / Creative Practitioner
Sefton Council is seeking an artist with experience of engaging children and young people with special educational needs in creative activity.

The artist will work at The Atkinson on a 12 month project funded by Children and the Arts. The project is part of a nationwide programme called Start which makes cultural venues accessible to new generations.

Through the Start project, The Atkinson will work in partnership with three local special schools and deliver a 12 month programme of bespoke workshops and performances for children with a wide range special educational needs including autism, physical disabilities and learning disabilities.

336 children will take part in the project between September 2015 and July 2016. The children will range in age from 4 – 16 years old. Each child will visit The Atkinson on at least two occasions over the year. On one of these visits the children will participate in a creative workshop led by the artist and on the other visit will they will see a performance in The Atkinson’s theatre.

The artist will plan and deliver approximately 42 creative workshops between September 2015 and July 2016. Each workshop will be different depending on the specific needs of the children attending but every workshop will be linked to the Atkinson’s exhibitions and collections. Workshops may use any art form and should last between 1 and 2 hours. Workshops do not need to be connected to the theatre productions that the children experience.

The artist will be required to work closely with teachers and The Atkinson’s staff to plan and deliver the workshops, ensuring that the best possible experience is provided for every child. Excellent personal organisation and communication skills are essential.

Through these workshops we want to inspire young people, promote their self-confidence and help develop their communication skills in new and exciting ways. We are looking for an artist who is a passionate advocate for making the arts accessible to all.

The artist will also work with The Atkinson’s staff and pupils to develop a resource to support young people with varied needs when visiting The Atkinson with their families.

Experience and understanding of autism  is essential for this role.
