Starting Work Without a National Insurance Number
It is possible to work without a national insurance number, however the employee should apply for a national insurance number as soon as possible whilst telling the employer an application has been made. Interview for a National Insurance Number
To apply for a national insurance number it may be necessary to respond to enquiries from Jobcentre Plus asking why a national insurance number is required and requesting the individual attend an interview.
The individual will need to prove their identity at the interview by taking appropriate documentation. These are usually, in order of significance, as follows:

  • Marriage or civil partnership certificate
