Campylobacter is the most common cause of food poisoning in the UK. The Agency through its Campylobacter Programme and ACT initiative (Acting on Campylobacter Together) is bringing together the whole food chain to reduce levels of campylobacter in chicken and to reduce the burden of food-borne illness. All parts of the food chain have signed a pledge to help to achieve this goal and it is clear that slaughterhouses and processors have a role to play to make sure that the processes they use keep levels of contamination in the birds they produce to a minimum. To this end processors are putting in place a range of interventions and it is important that Industry interventions are independently verified to ensure that they are fit for purpose. Once verified successful interventions may be rolled out more widely to other slaughterhouses/processors.
