The Met Office is an Executive Agency of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), occupying a world-leading position in meteorology, climatology and environmental science with an expanding and increasing global customer base. A key component in this is the Authority’s Managed Archive Storage System (MASS) and associated infrastructure is a critical adjunct to the Authority’s High Performance Computing (HPC) system, without which the latter cannot be used. MASS acts as a repository, or library, for data from the supercomputers, meteorological observational platforms and other sources. The Authority requires the ability to increase the capacity of the MASS environment to meet demands for the archive and restoration of large volumes of data produced by the HPC.
