We are the world’s greatest railway museum. There is nowhere that can better tell the epic story of the way rail has transformed the world we live in.

We have a challenge — to tell that story to 21st century audiences in a coherent and compelling way.

To fulfil our mission, we are planning a major project:

To completely re-display our Great Hall – the 8 300 m2 centre piece of the museum and one of the UK’s grandest exhibition spaces.

To create Wonderlab — a 2 300 m2 hands-on gallery and learning space inspiring future engineers.

To refresh and re-present our open collections store.

Our aim is to complete these works in 2021 as the first phase of a wider Masterplan for NRM.
