Description

Leicester City Council is looking to commission a Training Provider to deliver the following:

Event Title: Older People’s Mental Health / Dementia

Target Group: Care Management Staff Group – social workers, care management officers, support brokers, team support workers, team leaders and OTs

Number of staff to be trained per event: Up to 25

Number and length of events: 2 x 1 day

Dates: Before 1st April 2013

Venue: Leicester City venue

Overview: In October 2011, Leicester City Council’s Social Workers and Care Management Officers moved from working in specialist teams (i.e. Learning disability, Older Peoples Mental Health, Physical Disability), to working in generic, locality based teams. Although some informal transfer of knowledge has taken place within teams, time pressures mean that formal training is also needed.

Objectives: By the end of the course learners will have a better understanding of older people’s mental health, and how best to assess and work with people with dementia, as well as their families and carers. They will:

• Have an understanding of different models of care: medical, psychological and social. Discuss the importance of responding to the person not the condition.

• Have an understanding of the diversity of older people and the effects of discrimination.

• Have a greater understanding of the ageing process, and explored and identified the physical, sensory, emotional social and practical needs of older people.

• Have an overview of the “Feelings Matter Most” model of dementia, and have discussed some techniques for applying the “feelings matter most” principle in practice.

• Discuss “behaviour that challenges” as it applies to dementia. Understand why behaviour can challenge us, and why we need to deal with the person not the behaviour.

• Discuss any barriers the organisation may have and how to remove them
