The Three Trusts included in this PIN currently provide comprehensive pathology services for three hospital trusts, and direct access services for their associated GP catchment areas, at a total cost of approximately 47 000 000 GBP per annum. The hospital trusts are:
— South Devon Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust,
— Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust,

The services include (but are not limited to) the following clinical disciplines:
— cytology,
— microbiology,
— haematology and blood transfusion,
— virology,
— clinical chemistry,
— histology (including mortuary services),
— immunology.
The partnership of three hospital trusts is undertaking a review of pathology services with the aim of achieving a sustainable service model that is competitive with the best commercial and NHS providers on quality, access and price. The existing NHS providers are leading this review internally, but where the existing providers are unable to compete with the best-in-class, the Trusts would like to explore alternative service delivery options, including commercial service models.
Through this PIN the Trusts seeks to invite respondents to indicate their interest in providing all or any part of pathology services, whether as a sole provider or as a joint venture.
