Description of the contract

Aims and objectives of the Project Through this project we would like to gain a fuller understanding of the policy implications at both national and local level of the recent trends in the high street and retail sectors. This analysis should build upon the recent research that has been conducted in this area, and through innovative quantitative data analysis and qualitative research with volunteer case study areas/LEPs, provide us with recommendations to help increase the effectiveness of existing policy responses. The first part of achieving this will be to build on existing research that seeks to group particular town-centres according to their shared characteristics. This will consist of data driven research to group areas (i.e. “typologies”) according to observed local trends in the high-street and retail and key underlying drivers (e.g. demographics and travel) The next stage will be to apply this knowledge to the high-street/town centre areas present in a particular local area/LEP, and to examine how well tailored the current policy responses and strategies (at local, regional and national level), are in that area to the trends and typologies identified in the first part of the research. This stage of the research may could be extended to cover more than one local area/LEP, potentially deriving differentiated results by core cities, market towns and rural areas.
