Agri-Food and Bio-Science (AFBI) Hillsborough farm is used to undertake research in sustainable welfare sensitive livestock systems, as well as non-food crops and renewable energy systems. the livestock research programmes are focused on dairy, beef, sheep and pig enterprises. The dairy herd comprises 330 dairy cows, with followers, with cows ranging from high yielding Holstein-Friesian cows to lower yielding crossbred cows. The beef enterprise comprises both a 100 cow suckler unit plus replacements, and a beef rearing/fishing unit of up to 300 animals. The sheep flock consists of 300 breeding ewes, mainly Lleyn and Texel crosses. The Pig enterprise comprises approximately 140 breeding sows, with all offspring being reared on the farm. A wide range of research programmes are conducted within each enterprise. These encompass research into nutrition, management, fertility, breed comparisons and environmental issues. Most of this work will be undertaken at AFBI Hillsborough but on a few occasions it may entail work at AFBI Loughgall, with animals which have come from Hillsborough farm. The initial contract period is 2 years with 3 possible annual extensions.
