The
secure site for subscribers and public sector visitors was launched
May 2003. The Government Online Secure
Database is much more comprehensive and detailed than the Open database
provided for the general public. The database contains significantly
more information on key decision-makers in local, regional and central
government, with telephone, fax and e-mail facilities wherever possible.
If you are a member of the public sector and would like to have
access to the Secure Database please send an e-mail to data@government-online.net
with your name and a verifiable e-mail address and a username and
password will be sent to you. The service is free to public sector
users.
Since
its inception on 1 May 2001, Government Online (www.government-online.net) has become one of the most popular
public sector-based websites in the UK. It is visited regularly
by members of the public sector at all levels, and is often used
as a reference point by general members of the public to find information
relating to areas of concern. In providing the Open database free
of charge we are aiming to help the general public navigate through
the hundreds of public sector websites that exist to find the information
or the service that is right for them. If your organisation would
like to update its profile on either the Open or Secure database
please send an e-mail to data@government-online.net
and the new information will be uploaded within 5 days.
Joined-up
government is a crucial policy of modern governance, and for that
reason successful communication between different organisations
and individuals in the public sector is vital for delivering efficient
services. The Secure Database is being created to create a vast
electronic map of the public sector and to make this information
available to decision makers who are part of government and to suppliers
who work regularly with government. It is inevitable, given the
sheer size of the UK public sector that not all relevant information
is freely or easily accessible; however, R&D Information Services
Limited (the company that runs Government Online) has a clear strategy
for managing the vast quantities of information involved, and with
a new data processing model should be able to not only locate information
useful to members of the public sector and those with a professional
interest in it, but to maintain and update that information regularly.
Members
of the public sector are free to decide what information they would
like to make available, and what information it might be useful
to have listed in a central point of reference.
There
are no obligations on public sector subscribers to use the site;
we hope the quality of the information displayed will prove its
value, and its utility for interagency communication will be quickly
seen.
