Description of the contract

This project aims to overview literature, evidence and examples of the impacts of ‘big science’ experiments and infrastructures, particularly on innovation outcomes. The contractor will explore the landscape of big science facilities, asking three broad questions: 1. What does the existing literature on big science tell us about (a) modes of output and impact from big science facilities, (b) forms of interaction between big science organisations and business environments,(c) the broad innovation roles and impacts of such facilities? 2. What is the existing structure and composition of such facilities in the UK? How significant is the overall funding of such facilities within the UK science budget? 3. Looking forward, what are the primary research challenges related to the innovation and economic impacts of such facilities, and how might they be addressed in a future comprehensive research programme?
