A ‘Short Break’ is an activity that gives disabled children and young people a positive experience, and that also gives the parent(s)/carer(s) a break from caring.
Short Breaks can take place during the day, in the evening, at the weekend or overnight. Short Breaks can take place in the disabled child or young person’s own home, in the home of an approved carer, in a community setting or in a residential setting.
A Short Break can involve disabled children and young people joining in a group activity such as a club, or it can be an activity that a disabled child and young person does on their own supported by a care worker.
The overall Short Breaks Programme in Calderdale includes a range of activities, including universal, targeted and specialist provision and a range of providers, including external independent providers and in-house Council services.
This service specification outlines the requirements of the framework for the Specialist Provision Short Breaks service from 2015-2018, which forms part of the overall Short Breaks Programme in Calderdale.
