Description

Leicester is a dynamic, multicultural hub in the East Midlands with excellent transport links, a fascinating heritage, an impressive cultural offer and developing tourist profile. It has a strong history of enterprise and continues to look to develop stakeholder relationships with businesses for mutual benefit.

The Arts & Museums Service is committed to providing a range of high quality events and activities, within safe and suitable environments, which appeal to the diverse communities and age groups within our city. Leicester has a growing number of visitors from throughout the UK and beyond.

Diwali, the ‘Festival of Light’, is an ancient festival, celebrated in India and across the world each autumn. Diwali marks the start of the Hindu new year. It spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil and hope over despair.

Diwali is a religious festival celebrated by Leicester’s Hindu, Sikh and Jain communities, but everyone is welcome in Leicester’s ‘Golden Mile’ for this glittering spectacle, and it is enjoyed by a wide cross section of Leicester’s communities as well as national and international visitors.

As part of innovations planned for 2015, a two week “Diwali Leicester” festival will be promoted in the City Centre and Belgrave areas from 1 to 15 November, involving a wide range of partners.

As part of this overall programme, there are opportunities for potential sponsors to support the programme’s major highlight events which are funded and organised by Leicester City Council:

• Diwali Lights Switch-On Ceremony (Sunday 1 November 2015) in Belgrave Road: with the switch on of over 6,000 street lights along Leicester’s “Golden Mile”, stage performances and a fireworks display on Cossington Street Recreation ground, which adjoins Belgrave Road. This is usually attended by around 35,000 people.

• Diwali Day celebrations (Wednesday 11 November 2015) in Belgrave Road and Cossington Street Recreation Ground: including a host of performers, street entertainers and fireworks. This is usually attended by around 40,000 people.
