Management of wrecks is carried out by the MOD’s Salvage and Marine Operations (S&MO) team. S&MO currently assess the risk posed by a wreck based mainly on wreck condition, contents and location. This assessment typically includes desk based (Stage 1) research into the history of the wreck and its cargo/contents and, if this shows significant risk, an on site assessment of the wreck which may include side scan sonar, multi-beam sonar and ROV or diver survey.
