The University of Hull has been using virtual learning environments since 1997 initially with an in-house developed platform and subsequently vendor supplied and open source solutions. In 2008 the University changed from Blackboard to a Sakai open source platform with the in-house name ‘eBridge’ and hosted on the University’s technical infrastructure. The Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is the University’s primary means of delivering electronic education resources and tools to its students. The VLE covers a series of integrated learning and teaching applications that form a suite of software designed to enhance delivery, student performance and retention plus enhance staff and student engagement with the learning and teaching process.
The University is now looking to replace its current core VLE platform, and is approaching the market to determine available products, functionality and costs for such a replacement.
