The University of Portsmouth is advertising for the design and construction of an extension to the New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth which will house separate facilities for both the theatre and the University of Portsmouth.
The extension will house a new stage and fly tower with back of house facilities for the theatre and a performing arts centre for the University of Portsmouths Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries.

The contract is related to a project and/or programme financed by European Union funds: no

The extension will be arranged over four floors and will include a new side entrance, a drama studio, tv studio, teaching rooms, dressing rooms, flytower/stage, technical space and a learning resource facility. The installation of some specialist theatre infrastructure and equipment shall be incorporated into the main contract.
A design team is already in place and will develop the scheme to RIBA Stage E/F and the Architect and Structural Engineer will be novated to the main contractor. The project shall be procured on a single stage competitive tender basis using the JCT Design & Building Contract. The extension will comprise approximately 2 300 m2 of new space and the contract will include some alterations to the existing building. The anticipated contract sum is expected to be in the region of 6.5m GBP plus VAT.
A planning application is due to be submitted in July 2012 and a decision is expected in October.
