Tory MP Nadine Dorries appears on I’m a Celebrity | Eyewitness 2012

11 November: Tory MP Nadine Dorries makes controversial appearance on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!

I know that part of politics is accessing the people, and that’s what Nadine announced her intention to be. But I think that there must be more intelligent ways of doing that than appearing on a game show. Unless your political views are that outlandish, you’re going to get about three minutes’ air time.

Still, you’ve got a lot of time on your hands in the jungle, so we did talk about politics. I agreed with her on abortion because my little half-brothers and sisters were born around 23 weeks and I think the medical care for premature babies in this country is superb. Bar Nadine, none of us were experienced in foreign or home policy; we’d just absorbed it through our own lives and the news, so we had opinions, but it was a strange place to bring debate. I can’t see how it would effect change.

Viewers do see the real person on that show. It’s impossible to hide. In the beginning you have your persona, but you’re deprived of so many things – clothes, possessions, food – that in the end you only have your personality. Nadine brought emotional support to the girls in camp. I know she has a daughter and her experience as a mother shone though. She did her fair share of cooking, too.

We didn’t get on, but I wouldn’t want her to lose her livelihood. I asked her if she would pursue other opportunities that arose away from politics and she said she would. But would I vote for her as my local MP? Certainly not. © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies.
