Description

The Tour de France’s visit to the UK in 2014 is a rare opportunity and one not to be missed.

The city of Cambridge will be on the world’s stage and it is anticipated that at least 50,000 people will come to see the start of the Tour in the city on Monday 7th July 2014.

This commission is for an ambitious and high impact, publicly engaging artwork to be based in the city centre of Cambridge on the day of the Tour (and ideally longer).

It aims to maximise the opportunity for the city of Cambridge to be showcased, enjoyed and seen in a new light by local residents, and national and international spectators who will be out on the day to enjoy the start of the Tour de France, including potentially billions more across the world on TV.

This commission will form part of a countywide Cultural Cycling Festival of activity inspired by the Tour de France.

Cambridge has many excellent arts organisations and cultural institutions that contribute to its famous international reputation. It is a city of ideas, of innovation and excellence. This commission is an opportunity to draw attention to these treasures of Cambridge.

The commission is left as a deliberately wide and open brief for an artist, organisation or other body to interpret in a creative way to achieve its aim.

Submissions to deliver this commission are welcomed from individual artists as well as arts organisations, agencies, producers, creative industries and all those individuals or organisations with relevant experience. This includes those who might propose working in collaboration to deliver this project although the commission will be granted to just one party.

This commission is funded by the Arts Council England, South East and managed by Cambridge City Council.

Anyone submitting a tender must be able to demonstrate experience in successfully delivering large commissions of a scale and level of impact appropriate to the level anticipated from this commission.
