Description of the contract

Public Health England (PHE) was established on 1 April 2013 to bring together public health specialists from more than 70 organisations into a single public health service. Our mission is to protect and improve the nation’s health and to address inequalities. Immunisation is the most important way of protecting individuals and the community from vaccine preventable infectious diseases. The National Immunisation Programme Implementation and Management Team (NIPIM) at PHE provide national leadership and support for local area teams in their delivery of the Childhood Immunisation Programme. The team would like to commission three further waves of a survey to understand parental attitudes to childhood immunisations. This work needs to build on previous tracking surveys undertaken between 1991 and 2010 so that comparisons can be made about how parental attitudes differ now from previous years and to assess any impact following the introduction of new childhood vaccines into the schedule. The main purpose of the surveys is to explore parental attitudes to childhood immunisation to inform strategic planning of the immunisation programme. The survey covers parents’ experience of the service offered, trust in providers and how these relate to their acceptance of the programme, and beliefs about risk of vaccination versus risk of disease. The surveys allow comparisons between parents of different age groups (children 0-2 and 3-4 years) and by different demographic characteristics. This enables the identification of unmet needs in the parental experience of the immunisation programme leading to the development of interventions to target specific needs or groups as appropriate. The surveys also provide valuable early warning of parental concerns particularly following the introduction of new vaccines.
