Unintentional injury is a leading cause of death among children and young people aged 1–14 and nearly half of those deaths in England and Wales are transport-related. The UK’s record in child pedestrian safety is markedly at odds with its strong safety record for vehicle occupants. High quality evidence on interventional effectiveness to reduce injuries is scarce. Research is required to evaluate the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of interventions to prevent unintentional transport related injury to children and young people 16 years and under. Applicants should take into account exposure levels relating to active modes of transport such as walking and cycling.
