The University of Surrey operates from two campuses and subsidiary facilities in Guildford with an estimated population of over 18 000 staff and students. The University currently produces around 1 500 tonnes of waste per annum comprising separately collected and co-mingled recyclable materials, residual and hazardous wastes. On-site management of waste is undertaken by the facilities management team who service on-site buildings and consolidate a number of waste streams. The University currently achieves a 37 % recycling rate and has plans to increase this through the continued implementation of a waste management strategy.
The University proposes to let a 3 year contract with the option to extend for up to a further 2 years for a service provider to collect recyclable materials, residual and hazardous wastes for treatment or disposal at appropriate waste management facilities in line with the waste hierarchy. In providing these services, the provider will work in partnership with the University to deliver the objectives of the Waste Strategy.
