Description of the contract

English Heritage wishes to commission a project which will carry out a desk-based investigation to determine the extent of traditional floated water meadows in one of the areas of England where very few examples have been recorded, but where some potential for new discoveries can be demonstrated. It will provide information about how prevalent they were and will demonstrate their extent, location and type. The information gained will build upon the knowledge gained from earlier studies in different areas of England and will help English Heritage assess the degree to which water meadows are under-represented in Historic Environment Records. The project will examine a discrete geographical area of England where few water meadows are documented in archaeological records, yet a combination of factors, for example: suitable topographical and geological conditions, documentary references, local observations and/or the presence of large estates held by agricultural ‘improvers’ in the 18th and 19th centuries, demonstrate that water meadow sites may be under-represented. It will result in the production of a formal report giving detailed locational and contextual information, including a synthesis of water meadow distribution and an overview explaining the relationship between the area selected and the water meadow ‘heartlands’ of Wessex. A gazetteer should be provided listing the sites recorded and data collected should be compiled and managed within a GIS environment for use in archaeological record enhancement.
