Description of the contract

The Parliamentary Estate Directorate is inviting expressions of interest for lighting designers to act as a Lighting Design Consultant for the interior restoration of Westminster Hall. The Hall is one of the most significant medieval spaces in Europe, owing to its exceptional roof structure and historical importance. Originally constructed in 1097 by William Rufus, Westminster Hal was transformed between 1394 and 1401 under the instruction of Richard II, with the addition of the existing roof and heightening and re-facing of the walls. The project to provide a new lighting scheme in Westminster Hall aims to enhance the visitor experience through the introduction of an improved lighting design, and is part of a larger objective to retain both the architectural and historic integrity of the building. It also aims to improve the lighting of the roof, reduce the contrasting lighting levels within the Hall and, in combination with the proposed stone cleaning, improve ambient lighting levels. A discreet and permanent solution to the lighting requirements for occasional specialized events that occur in the space must also be provided for. It should be a systematic design that allows all fixtures to function as a whole, in addition to being easily operated and maintained (preferably from ground level), with all new fixtures being compatible with the hall’s architecture and not detracting from its historic integrity Please express your interest via the House of Commons procurement portal https://in-tendhost.co.uk/parliamentuk/aspx/Home Please note your expressions of interest via our In-Tend procurement portal to be received no later than 12 noon Wednesday 6 February 2013.
