Nexus wish to appoint a supplier to implement a system enabling Advanced Vehicle Location (AVL) data from all buses within Tyne and Wear to be processed to provide RTI outputs. It is proposed that the vehicle position or an arrival prediction for a vehicle will originate through ticket machine technology on the buses and be communicated to a local authority server hosting the system. This will process and disseminate the data potentially for use in UTMC, RTI, historic and real time vehicle monitoring. The scope of the project is to implement the system and the interface to each of the relevant functional inputs and outputs adhering to a standards based approach.

Nexus wish to exploit previous investment in a partnership in which all buses in the North East of England (over 1 700 buses) being equipped with SMART ticket machines having GPS and GPRS capability. The scope of this project is to develop and supply a system in future referred to as a data broker and an interface cloud. The data made available to the data broker will be either bus location data (positional) or pre-processed deviation from schedule data. The purpose of the data broker will be to merge and match the data with scheduled time data to produce data for use in UTMC, RTI, real time and historic, vehicle and or real time fleet monitoring. The data broker will be supported by a standards based interface cloud. This interface cloud will allow for all current systems interfaces to be supported, interfaces to the bus operator systems and also allow for future interface standards supported by the data broker to be physically implemented. The data broker must be able to service the North East bus fleet (estimated to be 1 700 buses) and all routes which operate in North East England. The principle deliverables will be the data broker, implemented interfaces and standards based interface documentation for all standards supported by data broker.
