Description of the contract

The ruins of Furness Abbey are located 1.5km north of Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria, UK. The Abbey was founded in 1127 under the Benedictine order of Savigny and latter absorbed and run by the Cistercians until its suppression in 1537. These ruins are statutorily categorised as both a Scheduled Ancient Monument as well as a Grade 1 Listed Building and are under the guardianship and care of English Heritage. The works proposed represent the 4th phase of a project relating to the urgent need to address major structural failure of the Presbytery walls of the Abbey. They entail the further ground investigation / archaeological excavation of the Presbytery walls in order to complete the necessary mitigative enabling excavation in advance of the essential structural conservation repairs – which are to follow under a separate contract as soon as these enabling works are complete. (Note there will be a further requirement for the selected archaeological contractor to carry out the watching brief for the construction works element of this project). The archaeological contractor to be selected will be required to have a demonstrated track record of the excavating; the recording; the interpretation and the evaluation of monastic archaeology and be able to provide evidence of such previous experience via the prequalification process.
