Blackpool is at the beginning of an incredibly exciting journey.
Blackpool was the first mass seaside resort created for the working class in the world. It has an internationally important history. Indeed Blackpool remains the byword for the seaside holiday worldwide. It has a unique place in the development of British Popular Culture, but nowhere is this fascinating story told. Blackpool Council has set out to create a brand new Museum for Blackpool which will bring together the heritage, artefacts, stories and memories which together tell the local, national and international Blackpool Story. The Museum will be based in the in the Pavilion Theatre within the Blackpool Winter Gardens.
We have been successful in securing a Round 1 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. This money will pay for the Development Phase (from now until autumn 2015). We will then submit a Round 2 Heritage Lottery application which should unlock major investment to actually make the museum. Our aim is to open the museum in 2018.
The museum will be located in the Pavilion Theatre and the associated ‘Horseshoe’. These are some of the earliest and most significant parts of the Winter Gardens, which are currently underutilised due to poor space condition and lack of suitable use. It is a fantastic opportunity to give them a new lease of life. The Museum’s focus on participation and performance is eminently sympathetic to the theatrical nature of the space and the cultural use of the wider Winter Gardens complex.
This is a very exciting time and we are looking to put together an imaginative, experienced and professional team to undertake a number of key activities as we move forward with our plans. We are currently recruiting to a number of newly created posts to take the lead on public engagement, research, learning and skills development. In addition we are going through a procurement process for the project management function. There are also two major contracts which we are seeking to award, this one for the Architect Design Team and another for the Interpretative Design Team. Everyone, both employees and contractors will need to gel quickly and work together as a mutually supportive team.
