Milton Keynes Gallery opened in 1999 as part of the Theatre and Gallery project, a development by the Milton Keynes Development Corporation.
MK Gallery is the only contemporary visual arts organisation within a 40-mile radius and is unique in the region in its ability to initiate and commission new work and projects that are presented internationally. Since its inception in 1999 it has produced a critically acclaimed programme of international contemporary art and is now established as a key cultural asset for Milton Keynes.
The vision for the future of MK Gallery is a world-class cultural, artistic and social hub. It will bring together high-profile and broad-reaching exhibitions, a vibrant family, community and learning programme, a much-needed independent cinema, spaces for talks, concerts and performances and a distinctive café and bookshop in a unique public building, open and welcoming to all.
A feasibility study has been undertaken and the Arts Council has passed the proposals at Stage 1, though the scope of the final project is still under consideration.
The feasibility study explores a horizontal ‘dispersed’ series of rooms functioning within a single, large, rectangular structure, incorporating the existing gallery (renovated, refurbished and improved). Set within a generous social space the other rooms accommodate the range of functions needed for the Gallery to fulfil its ambition to be a cultural and artistic hub:
Education suites, Cinema, Social spaces, Additional display for large exhibitions, A substantial foyer and bookshop, Cafe and bar.
Spaces that can be used for concerts, event hire and civic occasions.
The existing building services are coming to the end of their recommended 15 year typical life span. The gallery extension provides an opportunity to upgrade and adapt the existing services with new, more efficient, systems integrated with provisions for the new proposal.
MK Gallery has a desire to provide a sustainable low energy facility with low operational costs and to achieve a BREEAM Excellent.
