Description of the contract

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office – ‘the FCO’ or ‘the Foreign Office’ for short – is the government department responsible for promoting British interests overseas and supporting our citizens and businesses around the globe. The Foreign & Commonwealth Office estate consists of British Embassies, High Commissions, Consulates/Consulate General and Heads of Mission Accommodation in more than 200 overseas posts: • Our Embassy offices are usually found in capital cities and are headed by an Ambassador. • In the capitals of Commonwealth the office is called a High Commission and is headed by a High Commissioner. • We also have other offices in non-capital cities which have different names depending on the type of work they do. For example Consulates and Consulates-General mainly provide assistance to British nationals as well as visa and passport services. Trade Offices work to promote trade with the UK. In the course of time certain FCO properties have accrued items amongst the contents that may be considered to be antiques and works of art (AWA). The FCO has an obligation to ensure such items are well managed, correctly recorded and accurately valued in our annual accounts. The majority of the FCO’s AWA collection is located at overseas posts. Each financial year posts are required to perform an inventory check of all their AWA. In recent years valuation visits have been carried out to Brussels, Moscow and Prague, which house some of our more valuable collections. Our reporting requirements mean that we have to expand those valuations. Our intention now is to establish a targeted, low-cost, global valuation programme to ensure that the overall AWA valuation remains accurate. The programme will also inform our approach to prioritising any maintenance requirements.
