002681 – Hodgkin Park Art Project
Hodgkin Park was donated to the City by Thomas Hodgkin in 1899 for the benefit and recreation of local people. In 2012, in association with the new development of Scotswood the park is to undergo a major overhaul.
Newcastle City Council seeks to appoint a maximum of 2 professional artist/s. These artists will be required to work in partnership with the local community to create iconic entrance features in two identified locations in Hodgkin Park. (See map below)
The artwork must add quality, depth and character to the Park to help identify it as the major recreational area for the locality, invoking local historical context and providing a statement of optimism about the future.
A major element of the commission is to develop the sense of ownership and pride already evident in the neighbourhood. The artwork is to encourage use and discourage misuse and should instil a sense of involvement and inspiration to the community.
