Description of the contract

Information Age is a permanent gallery which tells the story of the transformations that have taken place in human communication in the last 200 years. It will expose, examine and celebrate the technology that has changed the way we live and connect with one another. It will illuminate how human creativity and decisions have defined and shaped our communications networks. This gallery will occupy the Museum’s largest space, an area of more than 2500 square metres, and will open in 2014.

The gallery will immerse visitors in the experience of change since the introduction of the electric telegraph in the 1830s. The excitement and apprehension that we experience today with the arrival of a new technology gives us a unique and visceral connection to the past. This gallery will immerse visitors in the parallel stories of that past, this present and our future, through the eyes of those who invented, operated, and were affected by each new wave of technology. It is the story of successes and failures, brave new ideas and ambitious schemes, of good and bad news – and of human nature – our universal need to connect.

Information Age marks a new phase in the history of the Science Museum: an ambition to make sense of the science that shapes our lives and to raise curiosity; release creativity and influence the future.
