Chantry Bridge Repairs. Chantry Bridge is a nine span masonry arch bridge over the River Calder in Wakefield. The original bridge was built soon after 1342 and was subsequently widened in 1730 and 1758.

Description
Chantry Bridge is a nine span masonry arch bridge over the River Calder in Wakefield. The original bridge was built soon after 1342 and was subsequently widened in 1730 and 1758. The Chantry Chapel of St. Mary, which stands on the east side of the bridge, was built between 1342 and 1356 and is one of only 4 bridge chapels still surviving in England. The bridge is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The carriageway over the bridge is closed to traffic at its southern end. The works comprise refurbishment of the bridge: – a) Traffic management. b) Site clearance including removal of vegetation, saplings and trees. c) Raking out and re-pointing of all masonry elements. d) Stonework repairs to upstream cutwaters. e) Taking down and rebuilding areas of masonry affected by tree/sapling growth. f) Removal of graffiti. g) Excavation in the watercourse. h) Renewal of areas of masonry to pier aprons. i) Renewal of lengths of timber edging beams to aprons. j) Scour protection works. (Infilling with concrete filled Hessian bags). Estimated value £175000. Please note the requirements within the qualification documents concerning work on ancient monuments and approval requirements with respect to the Environment Agency.
