The framework will be split into four lots as follows:
Lot 1 Energy Specialist,
Lot 2 Technology and Advanced Engineering Specialist,
Lot 3 Life Sciences Specialist,
Lot 4 Digital Media Specialist.
For these demanding positions, you will play a key role in forming and growing more companies of scale in Scotland. It has been recognised that in order to develop companies of scale the level of ambition within Scottish companies needs to be raised significantly and encouraged to aim high, seek international markets, appropriate levels of finance to achieve growth and source high quality talent from an international stage.
Scottish Enterprise has a strong focus on internationalisation and framework providers will be required to demonstrate that they take an international approach to growth in the support which they will provide, whether in fund-raising, market exploitation, or networks. The journey to becoming a company of scale is difficult and you will be required to support and encourage them to achieve the goals they have set and also expand their vision to recognise further opportunities.
Where appropriate, you will be required to use your excellent influencing skills, considerable commercial experience and extensive networks to provide intensive, hands-on support, guidance and advice to complex technology start-up companies and pre/post spin-out university projects seeking to become a commercially viable business. This will include using your knowledge and network of contacts to prepare and assist companies with sourcing high level investments, acquiring the right talent to support and drive the company forward and achieve success. At times this will include challenging preconceived ideas to introduce an element of realism, where required, to ensure capability and need for development or building a more investible team is realised.
You will be able to rigorously and analytically appraise projects from a technical and commercial perspective to identify genuine high growth or company of scale prospects and provide intensive support to secure the funding that will underpin the formation of a global business anchored in Scotland. You are expected to display energy, commitment and motivation and utilise innovative thinking to devise creative and entrepreneurial solutions to overcome the many issues that may arise in developing high growth companies. You will have a clear focus on building sustainable Scottish businesses, which have an international focus.
Throughout the duration of the contract you will be expected to maintain an up to date understanding and knowledge of SE and other support available to companies in this ecosystem, whilst working in a collaborative manner to deliver the most effective support.
You will have significant technical and commercial experience and a track record of success at a senior level in industry as well as experience of founding and running a business. It would also be advantageous for you to have experience of mentoring/coaching start ups and/or pre-university spin-outs.
You should be able to demonstrate considerable experience in the following areas:
Extensive network of national and international contacts that are current and relevant, including established extensive networks within industry, academia and investment community.
Significant experience of raising private and public funding, within and out with Scotland, reviewing potential grant availability, preparing/assisting with grant applications and advising on deal/equity structures.
Experience of finance, business planning, and establishing and managing companies (incorporation, legal matters, bank facilities, accounting systems, HR and payroll, VAT and other taxation issues, accounting, financial advisory and corporate governance).
Ability to provide a specialised project facilitation service, gathering intelligence on the ‘vision’ for the project — in particular its strengths, weaknesses, IP position, market data present/absent, validation of commercialisation strategy and provide a written report of findings and recommendations.
Previous experience of founding/running a technology business that has successfully productised its technology, grown a high calibre management team and board and sold its products to an international customer base.
Considerable experience in developing, managing and commercialising intellectual assets in a commercial setting which have international potential.
More detail is provided in the Invitation to Tender document.
If you are bidding for more than one lot please complete the relevant commissioning information contained within the PQQ document attached for each lot. Failure to do so will exclude you from this evaluation process for that lot.
