Description of the contract

DigitalCity Business [DCB] is the business driver for DigitalCity: its mission is to create a successful, vibrant and sustainable digital and creative supercluster in the Tees Valley. One of DCB’s tasks within this overall remit is to deliver cluster development activities across, with a new special focus on satellite activity across Tees Valley and the North East. It would now like to invite quotes for the role of animateur for the Baranrd Castle NeST Satellite, which will involve extensive working in Barnard Castle. The post is being offered as a freelance specialist with first hand experience of working with creative businesses. The contract length is up to the 31st March 2014: it anticipated it will require a commitment of approximately four days a week, irregular hours, and evening and weekend work to support activities being driven by the satellite initiative. Barnard Castle Vision has been working in partnership with DigitalCityBusiness since 2010 operating NeST gallery and artists’ studios in Barnard Castle as a rural satellite of DigitalCity Business. In that time NeST has created 10 new jobs, supported over 40 creative businesses through membership, coaching & mentoring and workshops. More than 100 artists have showcased their work. 2013 sees the opening of the new Witham in Barnard Castle. Funded in part through ERDF as move-on space for artists and businesses from NeST, the new Witham has a 250-seat auditorium, professional gallery space, meeting rooms and business facilities. Phase 1 of the project – Hall Street Artists studios is already open. The three operating organisations – DigitalCity Business, Barnard Castle Vision Community Interest Company and the Witham Hall Ltd are working together in partnership to support the digital and creative businesses of the town. With this in mind a contract opportunity for a creative animateur to co-ordinate and manage activity at NeST is being offered. NeST was one of the Vision’s first capital projects. The building opened in 2010 in a converted car showroom. It has become a busy business and creative hub offering studio space, office hot-desking facilities, a gallery and café. The contract will include running NeST and report to a management team comprising the directors of the Vision’s Community Interest Company working with DigitalCity Business. Key activities will be – • Programming the gallery spaces at NeST, selecting and hanging work, drafting artists agreements, managing payments to artists. This may include other spaces managed by the NeST gallery • The contract shall ensure that there will be a minimum of 4 days managerial presence at the NeST gallery; the remainder of the opening time will have to be covered by suitable volunteers under the control of this contractor • Recruiting, briefing and managing the team of member artists who staff the gallery at NeST • Developing and running the NeST business membership services • Being the link person with DigitalCity Business, ensuring that members at NeST and the Witham have access to the DigitalCity programme • Helping to organise creative business events, surgeries and workshops and to host events organised by partners • Providing regular written monitoring reports and evidence of engagement activities to the formats required by external funders and directors of Barnard Castle Vision Community Interest Company • Managing all forms of electronic communication including website and social media • Achieving quantitative KPIs including increasing sales/recruiting volunteers/building numbers on mailing list/communication targets including website management/weekly team meetings The animateur needs to have these key abilities – • Excellent organisational, communication and financial management skills • Excellent person-to-person skills • Practical experience of retail management • Project Management experience including experience in externally funded projects • Person business experience in the digital and creative sectors • Ability to work independently, including setting and meeting deadlines • Ambition • The ability to work as a member of a team, relating well with others, inspiring and enthusing volunteers and taking direction when required The contractor will most likely have either a degree in an appropriate field, or equivalent experience. The total value of the contract [or if there are contracts, the total aggregated value] will not exceed £20,000.
