Business Gateway offers information, advice and guidance across the whole of Scotland to people thinking about starting up in business or growing their existing business. It is a national service with built in local flexibilities providing advisory services on a one to one basis for businesses with growth potential. The Business Gateway service is managed by Lead Local Authorities and offers both direct support and a doorway to other services provided by Local Authorities and their partners. The Orkney service will be delivered through Orkney Islands Council.
In its delivery of the contract the contractor will be required to deliver the services:
1. A Start-up Advisory Service which principal components will consist of training workshops and advisory services;
2. A Growth Advisory Service which principal components will consist of training workshops and advisory services;
3. Business Gateway Local Services, the purpose of which will be to ensure that Business Gateway services are able to respond quickly and appropriately to changes in the needs of the local business base and accurately reflect the specific pressures felt by local businesses.
The contractor will be required to take into account the rural nature of the Orkney Islands, and note that the percentage of micro businesses is high in comparison to urban areas. Most businesses that engage with Business Gateway in Orkney are sole traders or small partnerships and are broadly dispersed across the islands.
