Description of the contract

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) Centre for Radiation Chemical and Environmental Hazards wishes to procure a system to allow 137Cs gamma irradiation of cells in culture at a range of dose-rates between (approximately) 0.1 and 100 mGy/hr for specific times (minutes to hours plus ‘hold’ option). The system must maintain a suitable environment for the culture of mammalian cells within a standard cell culture incubator (37°C, 5% CO2 humidified atmosphere) during uniform irradiation at a given height within the incubator. The system supplied must provide adequate shielding and safe control of radiation sources to allow the placing and removal of cells in the incubator. All relevant UK safety regulations and other regulatory requirements, (in particular in relation to radiation sources), must be complied with and the system must be acceptable to HPA’s Radiation Protection Advisor. The system will be housed in a specific location within an HPA building. To register interest in the above requirement, prospective suppliers are invited to inspect the location and discuss system requirements in more detail in the week 25th – 29th June 2012.
