The Government’s strategic aim, through the 10 Year Strategy and Children’s Workforce Strategy, is to ensure that, there is a workforce equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills and competence needed to deliver high quality early education, childcare and play for children aged 0 to 14 years (16 years for children with Special Educational Need).
A Statutory requirement of The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) also states that;
‘A practitioner in each setting must be designated to take lead responsibility for safeguarding children. In a childminding setting, the lead responsibility rests with the childminder. The lead practitioner should provide support, advice and guidance to other staff on an ongoing basis and must have attended a child protection course that enables them to identify, understand and respond appropriately to signs of possible abuse and neglect’.
Therefore we have identified the following priorities for training within the existing Private, Voluntary and Independent (PVI) childcare workforce and are looking for one training provider to deliver the training below:
- · Child Protection Level 1
- · Child Protection Level 2
- · Child Protection Refresher
The training is delivered to the PVI Childcare sector within East Sussex; this includes nurseries, pre-schools, and childminders, out of school clubs, holiday playschemes and nannies. At present the PVI workforce in East Sussex consists of approximately 3700 individuals. Although this application does not guarantee any level of business at present we run; 9 x Child Protection Level 1, 9 x Child Protection Level 2, 6 x combined L1 and L2 courses and 6 x Child Protection Refresher courses on a yearly basis to meet the demand of this workforce.
The training needs to meet the needs of this diverse workforce and trainers must have knowledge of the PVI childcare sector and the challenges they face as well as sound and recent experience of working within a safeguarding role/environment. The training needs to include a mixture of taught information, professional discussions and practical activities.
The contract period will be for one year initially from the 1 April 2013, with an option to extend this on a year by year basis for 2 further years.
