Description of the contract

On 4 February the Chancellor of the Exchequer and Education Secretary announced a new £500,000 fund to train teachers in computing. The Government will provide match funding from industry and business, equipping schools to teach the new computing curriculum introduced this September. Introducing children to skills like computing and coding skills from an early age is all part of the government’s long term plan to ensure young people have the first class education they need to succeed, and make sure Britain leads the global race in innovation. The Department has not specified the exact nature of this commission. Innovative and creative new solutions, to address the demands of teaching the new computing curriculum are encouraged but are not prioritised. Bids are welcome for any or all of the key stages and can be for either national or regional projects. Bidders must demonstrate how their support will have a positive impact on the quality of teaching of computing in schools, and how they will evaluate this impact. Estimated value: The Department has allocated £500,000 for this project and is seeking proposals from bidders who are able to secure at least 50% in matched-funding. The minimum contribution that DfE will make to a bid is £15,000 (meaning a total project minimum cost of £30,000) and the maximum contribution to any one project (or one organisation/consortium spread over multiple bids) is £150,000. Length of grant offer: The support to schools should be delivered by the end of 2014-2015 financial year, 31st March 2015.
