Description of the contract

 This contract is for the creation of electromechanical exhibits for the Information Age Gallery. It consists of two briefs:

1) Interactive and Projection Models

The scope of work is for the design, development, prototyping, production, delivery and warranty support for 7 interactive electromechanical exhibits and 1 passive projection, all based around model replica of objects on display as part of the Information Age gallery.

The Exhibit Designer should propose an elegant approach that is appealing and accessible for the target audience. The exhibits should create a powerful experience of manipulating the object while also effectively delivering the intended content and an understanding of its physicality.

Included within this contract:

The design and development of the exhibits.

Acquisition or creation of assets (including all necessary licences and/or clearances).

The presentation of initial and revised concepts at every stage of the development.

The presentation of initial and revised Look and Feel

The build of three prototypes of the exhibits for testing with visitors (including the writing of draft script).

The build or procurement of the bespoke electronic component necessary for the exhibits.

The build of the final exhibits.

The specification of technical guidelines and requirements for the build of the physical models in collaboration with the exhibition designer.

The specification of the hardware necessary for the exhibits in collaboration with the New Media department at the Science Museum.

The exhibit installation – with support from New Media and Maintenance team.

Detailed O&M manuals

Ongoing technical support during the 12-month warranty period.

Not Included:

The build or procurement of the generic hardware necessary for the exhibits.

Content research, script or copywriting.

Design and construction of the physical housing or environment for this interactive (although Exhibit Designers will need to liaise closely with the exhibition designers regarding the exhibit’s particular requirements).

2) Telephone Operators’ Stories

The scope of work is for the design, development, prototyping, production, delivery and warranty support for the electromechanical exhibit: Telephone Operator’s Stories, as part of the Information Age gallery.

The interactive explores how calls are connected on a manual telephone switchboard and brings insight to the life and work of the switchboard operators themselves.

The exhibit designer should propose an innovative approach that is appealing and accessible for the target audience. The exhibit should create a powerful audio experience while also effectively delivering the intended content.

Included within this contract:

The design and development of the exhibit.

The presentation of initial and revised concepts at every stage of the development.

The presentation of creative solutions to address the maintenance challenges

The presentation of initial and revised Look and Feel

Acquisition or creation of any asset (including all necessary licences and/or clearances) – the SM will provide Oral History sound files, the contractor will be required to do some editing work.

The build of three prototypes of the exhibit for testing with visitors (including the writing of draft script)

The build of the final exhibit.

The specification of technical guidelines and requirements for the build of the physical housing.

The specification of the hardware necessary for this exhibit in collaboration with the New Media department at the Science Museum.

The exhibit installation – with support from New Media and Maintenance team.

A detailed O&M manual
