Description of the contract

From 2004, a time-series of trawl surveys of Irish Sea roundfish has been developed under the FSP. The locations fished and gear used were chosen initially by the industry and since then were retained for consistency. On board, Cefas staff sampled the catch and analysed the data. The numbers of cod, whiting and haddock caught by age have been recorded. These catch rate data indicate the changing abundance of the year classes and the rate of fishing on the stock. These “FSP time-series” have been introduced into the ICES stock assessments since 2012. For the eastern Irish Sea there are data from 2005 on and for the western Irish Sea data from 2004 on. The results from all previous years are summarised in the latest FSP report on the Cefas website. The project has two components: an eastern Irish Sea survey, with a stern trawler, and a western survey, with a semi-pelagic trawler.
