Description

Later this year the Data Centre will relocate from New Walk Centre to another location outside of the city centre. For that reason Leicester City Council need to explore the costs of maintaining a diverse resilient network collections between large city centre sites.

The council currently has a resilient wide area network connecting buildings within the city centre. This is mainly provisioned by ‘dark fibre’ installed within ducts owned by the council but also by two rented dark fibre circuits. All of the circuits are equipped for, and run at 1 Gb/s. These are supplemented by resilient circuits provided on WAN supplied and managed by Virgin Media Business (VMB).

The ‘A’ end for all of these circuits is either in the basement of New Walk Centre A Block or in the data centre on 3rd floor B Block. Both of these buildings are destined for closure by April 2014 and the council wishes to re-provision resilient connections for the city centre sites.

The sites are listed in appendix 1 and only the sites listed in the section ‘Sites that currently have resilience’ should be considered. However other city centre sites are listed for information and possible inclusion if economically viable. The address, postcode and universal property reference number have been provided. Appendix 2 has descriptions of the existing ducts in use or available for use. In addition to the ducts owned by the council for traffic control and CCTV systems the Council also has access to ducts provided by the District Heating Scheme.

The Council are upgrading the managed WAN circuits to 1Gb/s and require diversely routed secondary connections for each city centre site provided at a minimum of 100Mb/s.

The council are seeking interest from organisations that will either reroute the existing dark fibre or provide and specify an alternative connectivity at a minimum of 100Mb/s.
